WhatsApp has asserted that its messages are encrypted and it cannot offer traceability.

“As a WhatsApp user you have the choice to not backup your data to Google Drive,” said Sai Krishna Kothapalli, an independent security researcher.“They (WhatsApp) are not forcing you to backup. It is a feature. So, if you trust Google, you can enable it.”

"From a privacy perspective (completely discounting convenience) online backups are no good regardless of who the custodian is. While Google does encrypt files on the server side they also ultimately control the keys for those -- which can be provided to law enforcement authorities on the basis of a warrant," said Karan Saini, independent security researcher.

WhatsApp provides end to end encryption, meaning the message a user sends can only be read by the recipient and vice versa. Further,WhatsApp guarantees protection to users from third parties trying to eavesdrop on conversations, and even prevents WhatsApp itself from reading the messages.

While the messaging platform itself is encrypted, “for users who choose to backup, the messages are decrypted on your phone and sent to your drive as backup,” Kothapallli said, adding that this is where there could be cause for action.

A mail to WhatsApp seeking additional comments did not elicit response on Sunday. A Google spokesperson reiterated a statement on the pact, adding “any backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed from storage”.

Separately, Google said on August 16 its customers who buy storage space on Drive that they can manually backup WhatsApp client by October 30.

The backup to Google Drive is a simple way of backing up chat history so if you change devices or get a new one the data isn’t lost.

As per the MoU, the technology giant will open two new MSME-Samsung Technical Schools in Bengaluru and Jamshedpur, the company said in a statement.

"We are committed to creating an industry-ready workforce and provide industry-oriented skills to our youth under the Skill India programme. Samsung has been a valuable partner in our quest to create a vast pool of talent," Kalraj Mishra, Union Minister for MSME, said in a statement.

Reinforcing its commitment to the government's "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, Samsung also announced the MSME-Samsung Technical School Scholarship programme for girls and differently-abled trainees. A Meritorious Reward Programme for toppers at these institutes has also been launched.

Under the MSME-Samsung Technical School Scholarship programme, 1,000 girls and differently-abled trainees, who have successfully completed the basic course, will be given a scholarship of up to Rs 20,000. 

The toppers among Samsung Technical School students will also be given a reward of Rs 20,000.

"The government, with its ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana', has been trying to generate awareness about various welfare schemes for girls in the country," Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Union Minister for Food Processing, said.

Meanwhile, H.C. Hong, President and CEO of Samsung Southwest Asia, said: "Samsung is proud to help impart technical skills to youth of this country. Our collaboration with the Ministry of MSME has enabled us to tap the potential of youth and make them job-ready with the help of the Samsung Technical School initiative."

The United Kingdom was China's second-largest trading partner from among members of the European Union in 2016, and its eighth-largest worldwide, according to a new study.

Britain did 55 billion pounds ($71.9 billion) of trade in goods with China last year, said the report from the Confederation of British Industry, which is also known as the CBI.

Germany came in first out of all EU nations, with 112 billion pounds.

The United States was China's top trading partner, doing 386 billion pounds worth of trade in goods with China in 2016.

Britain, Germany and the United States were the only economies from outside the Asia-Pacific Region to feature among China's top nine trading partners in 2016.

Guy Dru Drury, head of CBI China, said a strong trading performance with China is encouraging news for the UK as it prepares to exit the EU.

"As the UK forges a new global trading future, it is well ahead of the curve in making the most of its relationship with the world’s fastest-growing economy," Drury said.

Transport technology, including automotive, rail, air, and maritime resources, accounted for 21 percent of British exports to China. Machinery and electrical goods made up 12 percent of the UK's China-bound exports, followed by 8 percent in chemical products and 5 percent in metals.

The UK's top service export was travel, which accounted for 1.5 billion pounds of exports. Last year, a record 270,000 Chinese travelers visited the UK, and 91,000 Chinese students enrolled in British universities – far more than from any other country.

The UK was eighth worldwide in terms of foreign direct investment in China between 2006 and 2015, with investment totaling 4 billion pounds during the period.

The study also found that, unlike most economies, the UK is shifting its focus from coastal to inland Chinese provinces, which have historically received a smaller share of foreign direct investment.

In 2015, British foreign direct investment in China totaled 1.5 billion pounds. More than half of that total went to inland regions, led by Heilongjiang province in Northeast China, which received 313 million pounds of investment, and Henan province in Central China, which received 276 million pounds.

As of the end of 2015, Heilongjiang had approved 69 UK-invested enterprises that focused on sugar and other food processing, the wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, and advanced technology promotion.

One hundred enterprises in Henan received some form of British investment in 2015. British automotive engineering company GKN has a factory in Henan that has grown into Asia's largest producer of automotive cylinder liners.

Gujarat Assembly Election will implement VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) after the successful implementation of the same in Goa state assembly election 2017. The system will be counted and tallied with the number of votes in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

The Election Commission decided to count the VVPAT slips of a random polling station in each Assembly constituency, to check with the polled votes in EVM. If the candidate is doubtful about the result of a particular EVM of a polling station, the candidate can request the Returning Officer to count the VVPAT slips.

The Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti, met political parties, DEOs, CPs, SPs, chief secretary, DGP and senior government officials while inspecting the election preparation in Gujarath. He said that the commission is committed to maintain the purity of elections and to deliver fair and transparent election. The CEC also said that a mobile app based complaint system regarding abuse of money will be activated in each district, which will enable people to file complaints with authorities.

The Commission advised DEOs to constitute election expenditure monitoring teams, in order to deploy the adequate number of flying squads and surveillance teams, to monitor the movement of money through banking channels, and to deploy specialized IT intelligence authorities at airports and railway stations, to check the misuse of money power. The CEC also welcomed suggestions regarding law and order, abuse of money, electoral rolls, and other issues raised by political parties.

Paytm payment bank will launch debit card, free insurance

Participated with the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) to bring a digital debit card based on Paytm Payments Bank (PPB). Through PPB digital card, the customer will be able to make payments to all the traders who accept credit and debit cards. This will allow Paytm customers to make online payments, but Paytm will also provide free insurance to its customers, in which customers will be covered in up to 2 lakh insurance cover.
Rupee based digital debit card will be issued to all customers who open accounts in PPB. The current PATIm users will have to complete the KYC process to become the PPB's account holder, after which they will be given a free digital card.
2 lakhs of insurance:
There will also be two lakhs of insurance on the debit card. In case of death or full disability, the insurance company will get the sum assured. PPB MD and CEO Renu Satti said, "With our digital debit card, our customers will now be able to make payments on every online platform and they will experience similar features like Paytm."

36 IAS officers transferred in UP

The Uttar Pradesh government has transferred 36 IAS officers, appointing Anup Chandra Pandey as the new Industrial and Infrastructure Development Commissioner.

Prominent among those transferred included Member Judicial (Revenue Board) Lalit Verma, who has been made Additional Chief Secretary General Administration, while Alok Tandon has been made CEO Noida and MD Noida Metro Corporation.

According to the transfer order released by the government last night, while Pandey will be new IIDC, CEO Greater Noida, Shailesh Krishna was appointed as Director General Deen Dayal Upadhaya State administration and Management Academy.

Principal Secretary Agriculture Rajnish Gupta has been shunted as member judicial, Revenue Board, Allahabad while CEO Noida Amit Mohan Prasad will be new Principal Secretary Agriculture.

Sanjiv Kumar Mittal in wait list has been made Principal Secretary Finance and Finance Commissioner, Ritu Maheshwari, Vice Chairman Agra Development Authority, has been made DM Ghaziabad.

The Central Board of Secondary Education [CBSE] and Delhi University [DU] should sit together and charter a course that will help students. It is important to have an upward linkage,” said Ms. Gupta. The keynote address on “New age technologies for education” was delivered by Ritu Gupta, director, marketing, consumer and small business, Dell India.

England have recalled Toby Roland- Jones for the third and final Test against the West Indies at the Middlesex paceman's Lord's home ground, skipper Joe Root said today.

Roland-Jones is the only change to the side that suffered a surprise five-wicket defeat by the West Indies in the second Test at Headingley as the tourists levelled the three-match series at 1-1.

According to the source, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 will be launched as Galaxy Tab A2 S. Yes, this is indeed quite an unusual decision coming from the company, especially, when there are already a ton of rumors out there about this tablet. However, this is what we have with us right now. The model number (SM-T380 / SM-T385), however, remains the same and it has also been reported that it will carry the same set of specs as well.

It is worth noting that Samsung is indeed known for going with complicated names for their devices. There have been instances in the past, where the company had launched smartphones like “Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus” which is a mouthful. And this alleged new name for the tablet is also no different. But we just hope that it will be a great offering for the consumers in the market who are still looking for a decent tablet offering.

As far as the specs are concerned, it has been reported in the past that this tablet will carry an 8-inch display on the front with a resolution of 1200 x 800 pixels. Internally, it is expected to be powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 427 processor and this is expected to be coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Coming to the optics, we are looking at an 8MP rear-facing shooter, whereas on the front, it looks like there is a 5MP selfie camera.

As mentioned earlier in our previous post about this tablet, this is expected to be the first tablet to carry Bixby assistant with it. Now, talking about the pricing and the availability, there is no official wording, however, we won’t be surprised to see this tablet being unveiled at IFA 2017 show floor as early as next week. Consumers are shocked today as the oil companies have announced an increase of Rs. 73 in the price of Rs. 2.35 a liter of cooking gas and Rs. 133 in the 19 kilo commercial bottles.
After the new prices implemented from today, the consumer will have to pay Rs.633 instead of 60% for domestic cylinders.
Due to increase in cost, the amount deposited in the Linkup Bank account will also increase from 78.99 to Rs. 14,571.
The commercial kits of 19 kilos, which were available in Rs1036 so far, will now have to pay Rs.1149.P.

Artists, students decorating walls of government schools

Artists and students of art schools have a task – to do up the compound walls of government institutions with attractive paintings on Mysuru Dasara, folk art and much more in the Core Heritage Area (CHA) here.

Students from Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Sri Kalaniketana School of Arts, Ravi Varma School of Arts and Vyjayanthi School of Arts have been roped in by the Mysuru City Corporation to beautify the compound walls with attractive paintings that enliven the streets ahead of Dasara.

The compound walls of only the government departments and institutions are being painted by the young artists, who are using water paints to give a facelift to walls that are covered with unwanted posters and other publicity material.

Santosh, an artist from Sri Kalanikenatan School of Arts, told The Hindu that his team of artists has been working on the walls for ten days now. “Like us, students and artists from other schools have been allotted walls by the MCC and are also painting them for over a week now,” he said.

‘Governments reluctant to continue funding education’

Governments have been reluctant to continue their involvement in funding education but retain control of sector for social justice as well as electoral politics. To suit this, quick fix methods are employed and a comprehensive policy framework for regulation and delivery of services is not in place. Current agencies such as the UGC, AICTE, NCTE, and MCI etc. are engaged in routine tasks of overseeing rules for permissions to start institutions; their contribution to standards, quality, content and delivery mechanisms is not fully visible yet, said Dr. Madhu Kumar, secretary and correspondent of Dr. L. Bullayya College at the monthly round table of Centre for Policy Studies on Thursday. In a comprehensive presentation he covered a wide and complex area of higher education involving parents, students and teachers.

It was noteworthy that the elite institutions are government funded but big money is channelled to ordinary private institutions, he said.

Referring to pressure students are undergoing, he said: “Students have come under extreme pressure in this reality of parental expectations and their inability to cope with either because of lack of aptitude or improper delivery from deficient colleges.” Some have taken the extreme step of suicides but a good number have taken refuse in substance abuse or social media abuse”.

The solution lies in a calm and dispassionate study of the situation by parents, teachers and the larger society to enable our younger generation to display their potential and contribute to national development.

Intervening, K.C. Reddy, former APSCHE chairman, stressed the need for evolving strategies to make the public-private models integral part of the system keeping in mind the changing objectives in the emerging knowledge economy.” Centre director A. Prasanna Kumar spoke.
